Poll Question:
Do you believe there is a difference between alcoholism and addiction other than substance chosen?

my understanding is that while addiction is addiction is addiction - different substances (and addictive behaviors) hit different parts of the brain and there is obviously some difference in the power of different substances.
i have heard it said that cocaine gets you to the same place in 2 years that alcohol may take 10+ years to get you (job loss, money gone, family has left, possessions are gone, etc.).
addiction is the same in that we consume our substance because we are addicted to the way it makes us feel and the problems it creates are secondary to that next high or drunk. |

Interesting Tenn - never looked at it that way. I view it as such - addiction can be anything: drugs, gambling, porn, and so on - each different addiction hits the individual's brain, if you will, where it creates the euphoria it seeks - each to his / her own. For some gambling has no effect at all, but say, drugs do, for example.
Addiction is an interesting topic overall, yet so distructive in its own ways.

| Interesting you should say that. I am a counsellor, I work at http://www.drugandalcoholdetox.co.uk we run specific sessions on what we call cross addiction. Cross addiction is easy to understand when you see that any form of addiciton is the same. Once we give up our drug of choice our 'Addict' will find ways to satisfy itself. It might be anything like shopping, gambling, cleaning or even nookie! If untreated we can have a tendancy to want to change the way we feel however we do it. |
